Documented artwork / woven willow outdoor installation

Fly Away Home

Patrick Dougherty

Credit as documented: Patrick Dougherty

Fly Away Home is Patrick Dougherty’s willow installation made in March 2022 for Carpenter Park in Cary, North Carolina. The artist describes a footprint assembled from three interlocking puzzle-like shapes. Dougherty explains that the starting pattern became less apparent as the sculpture grew and took on a sense of movement and playfulness. The work stands beside a park sidewalk used by players, families and other visitors, with a small lake behind it reflecting the woven forms. Dougherty’s published dimensions are 60 by 25 feet, reaching 12 feet high, and his material note identifies willow supplied by Ramo in Quebec. Cary’s project account documents a community residency and a later photograph dated 2025. Neither that photograph nor the historic artist entry verifies the sculpture’s present condition or continued accessibility.
