Fit for a King

Patrick Dougherty

Credit as documented: Patrick Dougherty with Sam Dougherty

Fit for a King creates a palace-like environment from woven saplings among the palms and flowering trees of Mounts Botanical Garden. Patrick Dougherty and his son Sam returned to the garden in November 2022 after an earlier installation there. Their new design aimed for a height visible from several places in the landscape. A central dome contains a high circular opening, with additional windows around its upper and lower levels.

Materials and construction

The artist lists Quebec willow and an installation thirty-five feet square and twenty-one feet high. He explicitly credits Sam's growing role in the design and execution of their 2022 sculptures.

Presentation and site context

Four entry halls lead into the central volume, giving visitors several routes through the structure. Mounts' history includes Fit for a King among its hosted exhibitions; it does not establish current survival or access.
