Documented artwork / site-responsive bronze sculpture

Everything that Rises

Martin Puryear

Credit as documented: Martin Puryear

Everything that Rises is Martin Puryear’s bronze sculpture made for the University of Washington’s Physics and Astronomy Plaza in Seattle. ArtsWA describes a form organized symmetrically around a vertical axis, with a copper-colored surface selected to respond to the surrounding buildings. Kentucky fabricator Vendome, Inc., better known for distillery tanks, produced the sculpture. Its acquisition joined Washington’s State Art Collection with the university through a site-responsive commission.

Materials and construction

The university’s architectural account identifies the courtyard sculpture by title and its informal nickname, Peanut. This places it within Cesar Pelli’s Physics and Astronomy complex rather than treating the surrounding building as part of the sculpture. ArtsWA dates the work 1996; the 1994 embedded in its accession identifier is not an installation date.
