Documented artwork / monumental figurative bronze public sculpture
Embodied
Credit as documented: Alison Saar
Alison Saar’s Embodied presents justice as an open-eyed bronze woman in the exterior plaza of Los Angeles County’s Hall of Justice. A book and a dove replace the sword and blindfold associated with conventional justice figures. Saar combined facial features from different ethnicities to reflect the county’s population. More than 200 words collected through conversations with government staff, students and other residents appear across the dress in over a dozen languages. The county credits a local production team of more than 30 artisans, casters and engineers, including Decker Studios in North Hollywood and Exclusive Welding in La Crescenta. The work therefore connects the building’s civic purpose to both community contributions and substantial regional fabrication.
