Cursive Takes a Holiday

Patrick Dougherty

Credit as documented: Patrick Dougherty

Cursive Takes a Holiday extends Patrick Dougherty's schoolhouse setting at Tippet Rise into the surrounding landscape. Built in July 2022 from locally harvested willow, it begins at the porch roof and curls outward toward the woods. The artist likens its looping edges to handwriting released from the classroom's ruled lines. Tippet Rise identifies the work as a companion to Daydreams, the earlier sculpture in and on the schoolhouse, and describes connected circular spaces that visitors can enter and leave.

Materials and construction

Dougherty publishes a ninety-by-twenty-foot footprint and fourteen-foot height for the 2022 work. These measurements are distinct from the older school's interior installation and from the replica building itself.
