Documented artwork / rooftop sculpture

Concordia

DeWitt Godfrey

Credit as documented: DeWitt Godfrey

Concordia places fifteen large steel cylinders on the roof of Lexington's Downtown Arts Center. DeWitt Godfrey's 2012 work occupies the former Lexington Laundry Company building, an early twentieth-century Art Deco structure. Its cylinders lean against the taller nineteenth-century Neoclassical building beside it, making the relationship between the two buildings part of the composition. Godfrey likens the arrangement to a buttress and connects that image with the arts center's supporting role in its community.

Materials and construction

The assembled steel weighs 14,000 pounds. The artist describes extensive consultation with architects, engineers and riggers, together with negotiations among site stakeholders. Those consultations concerned placing a large sculpture in an existing architectural setting; the source does not name the individual participants.
