Documented artwork / wind-responsive illuminated transit sculpture

Cloud

Haddad|Drugan

Credit as documented: Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan (Haddad|Drugan)

Cloud suspends more than six thousand acrylic discs in a shifting field above a transit setting in SeaTac. Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan arranged white, violet, yellow, orange, pink and silver discs on horizontal stainless-steel cables supported by curved arms. Wind activates individual elements, while programmed lighting extends the work's sunset-like palette after dark. The colors fade toward blue when trains approach, connecting the installation to station activity.

Materials and construction

The artists date Cloud to 2016 and give an overall length of forty-eight feet and height of twenty-six feet. The five-inch disc diameter is a component measurement. Sound Transit commissioned the work; KPFF provided engineering and Fabrication Specialties Ltd. built it. The named historical Bayview Rise and Emergence cards describe separate Haddad/Drugan projects.
