Documented artwork / transit mosaic mural installation

Ciguapa Antellana, me llamo sueño de la madrugada (who more sci-fi than us)

Firelei Báez

Credit as documented: Firelei Báez

Firelei Báez's four murals fill the 163 St–Amsterdam Avenue station with leaves, vines and figurative fragments. Tropical and North American flora mingle with patterns associated with healing and community. Ciguapas, powerful feminine figures from Dominican folklore, connect the imagery with Caribbean cultural memory. The parenthetical title draws on a Junot Díaz novel and places that imaginative inheritance within a contemporary transit setting.

Materials and construction

Completed in 2018, the installation comprises two platform murals and two mezzanine murals. Mayer of Munich translated Báez's imagery into glass mosaic. The MTA's account treats the four surfaces as one commission, so the component count does not create four separate artwork identities. No combined surface area or individual panel dimensions are published in the reviewed account.
