Antorcha de Amistad (Torch of Friendship)

Sebastián

Credit as documented: Sebastián (Enrique Carbajal)

Sebastián's Antorcha de Amistad gives a physical form to the relationship between Mexico and the United States. Two red uprights bend into a shared, twisting arch, linking separate paths through one continuous composition. Installed in 2002, it occupies the downtown San Antonio traffic circle where Commerce, Alamo and Losoya meet. The city catalogue associates the joining forms with two languages and cultures, while the surrounding roads make that convergence part of everyday movement through the city.

The catalogue identifies painted iron and a height of 780 inches. Donor descriptions differ: it names Asociación de Empresarios Mexicanos; the municipal library and University Health describe a Mexican-government gift. The relationship between those credits remains unresolved.
