Documented artwork / monumental gateway sculpture
Alachua
Credit as documented: John Henry
John Henry’s Alachua is a yellow painted-aluminum gateway at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Four separate sections stand without touching: two on either side of the approach to the Marston Science Library and the Computer Science and Engineering Building. Their arrangement allows people to pass through the composition into the building rather than treating the sculpture as an isolated object beside a path. The State of Florida commissioned the 1987 work through its Art in State Buildings program. Named for the surrounding county, it became a campus landmark and meeting place. Henry’s archive also records its contentious initial reception and the food-related nickname students later used affectionately for the yellow forms.
