Research notes for project planning
What the project record tells us
2016 Aurora commission at a regional transit station.
Biological form becomes a station marker
Biota is documented as a 2016 City of Aurora commission at RTD Peoria Station. Painted steel, acrylic and programmable LEDs form a tall sculptural marker whose repeated elements draw on biological growth. The project gives a transit buyer a concrete reference for combining a recognizable daytime shape with a controlled nighttime image. A comparable brief should identify the desired arrival view, neighboring lighting conditions and access to replaceable lighting components, then ask the design team to demonstrate those conditions together during development.

Community language becomes the structure’s content
Hancock’s December 2025 announcement describes Civitas at Lewisville’s Tittle McFadden Public Safety Center. Hancock’s account describes a stainless-steel canopy incorporating seventy-two phrases in five languages, gathered through an employee workshop and a community concert. That origin is useful for a civic buyer because engagement produces material incorporated into the final object. A similar commission needs a documented process for selecting, translating and approving words, with time for participants to check meaning before text becomes a permanent fabricated surface.

Participation needs a defined fabrication role
Hancock’s process page describes Bike Church as a solar-powered sculpture using recycled bicycle parts, with high-school interns contributing circular panel designs. It also describes the specialist teams involved in engineering, fabrication and installation across her practice. For a commissioning organization, the distinction between participant authorship and technical production deserves an explicit brief. Define what participants can design, how those designs enter the finished work and which qualified team members resolve structural, electrical and installation details before public workshops begin.
