Giving mathematical ideas a physical form

A worked research exercise to show direction and expose questions. No artist proposal, cost estimate or suitability determination is implied.

USU’s renovated Animal Science Building will house Mathematics and Statistics, with artwork considered for corridor walls or a double-height interior. Soda Bottle Wave and Evolve offer different starting points for a new, department-specific commission: visible periodic motion and a suspended composition of light-responsive surfaces. They are educational and spatial references, not available acquisitions or proof that their artists meet the call’s applicant conditions. The actual connection to mathematics should be developed with the department, and the building’s structural limits remain unresolved.

Soda Bottle Wave

Reuben Margolin

sculpturekineticwoodmetal
Documented dimensions
12 × 12 × 25 feet tall
Version / scope
Artist’s stated dimensions for the 2009 Soda Bottle Wave; structural attachment and shipping dimensions are not supplied.
Materials
recycled two-liter soda bottles, string, wood, steel, electric motor
Technical facts & planning questions

Documented facts

  • One electric motor drives the work.
  • The artist describes washing 600 bottles and arranging the ring into three wavelengths.

Questions for a new site

  • What support and service access would the suspended ring require?
  • How would visitors be positioned relative to the moving bottles?
  • What replacement and tuning process would keep the wave consistent?

Documented dimensions
6,000 mm W × 6,000 mm D × 4,300 mm H
Version / scope
Designer-submitted Evolve lobby project, award entry 114149; not Evolve 17.
Materials
dichroic Plexiglass, stainless steel, aluminum, mirrors, LEDs
Technical facts & planning questions

Documented facts

  • Artist entry states 960 pounds and aircraft-cable suspension.

Questions for a new site

  • What building-specific suspension and ceiling interfaces would a new display need?
  • How would daylight and artificial lighting change the dichroic effects?
  • How would technicians reach the hinges and panels for inspection?

Why these references?

Soda Bottle Wave

Soda Bottle Wave uses one motor to drive a ring arranged into three wavelengths. That documented mechanism offers a tangible way to discuss periodicity. Its 2009 installation dimensions do not establish a fit within USU’s interior or adequate maintenance access.

Editorial rationale grounded in the linked research; not artist intent or a recommendation of availability.

Evolve

Evolve’s documented lobby installation combines dichroic Plexiglass, metal, mirrors and LEDs. It is a spatial and suspension precedent; any mathematical interpretation would be a proposed curatorial connection, not a documented purpose of the existing work.

Editorial rationale grounded in the linked research; not artist intent or a recommendation of availability.

Questions before a proposal

  • Which mathematical ideas should be readable without specialist explanation?
  • Would static geometry or movement better suit teaching, concentration and daily circulation?
  • What ceiling loads, viewing distances, service access and replacement obligations are acceptable?
