How the program works
Existing artworks need a complete installed price
New Mexico Arts’ purchase guidance makes the artist responsible for safe delivery and installation at the eventual public site. The all-inclusive price must account for items such as framing or protective display, a pedestal where appropriate, site preparation and foundations for exterior sculpture, travel, labor, insurance, taxes and documentation. Artists may hire an art handler. For monumental works, this means an artwork-only asking price is not enough to assess whether a purchase initiative is financially feasible.
What does the installed price become after foundation design, transport, equipment and site labor are included?
A purchase series is distinct from a sculpture category
New Mexico Arts explains that its general Large Scale purchase category refers to price, not physical dimensions; it can include monumental sculpture or a group of smaller works. The reviewed 2026 Southwest and Native American and Indigenous initiatives instead advertise their own $5,000–$50,000 ranges and specific applicant conditions. Artists and galleries should follow the exact prospectus rather than applying general program ranges to every call. Site committees choose from submissions gathered through the relevant public process.
