Program context & project planning
How the program works
Five awarded airport sites use different artistic formats
The foundation’s airport artist-selection page documents already awarded commissions for five terminal sites. Anne Lindberg’s work uses printed glass at check-in, Adam Frank combines glass and projection around an elevator, and Gordon Huether’s The River is suspended above the meeter-greeter area. These are precedents for matching a medium to a specific architectural encounter, not open opportunities. A new airport brief should describe visibility, circulation and building interfaces so artists can respond to the space’s particular function.
Which passenger encounter defines the artwork’s format?
Exterior approach and shelter art can work together
For the new Des Moines airport, the foundation identifies Matt Niebuhr and the RDG Art Studio’s Color Sentinels at the exterior approach alongside imagery for adjacent bus shelters. Metal elements with a high-performance finish and accent lighting are paired with printed vinyl on glass. This awarded project shows how a commission can connect different components along an arrival sequence. For planning, define each surface, lighting requirement and fabrication responsibility while preserving a shared artistic idea across those distinct physical systems.
