Program context & project planning
How the program works
Approval is distinct from procurement
Columbus Art Commission reviews city acquisitions, commissions and gifts, plus art on city property or public rights of way. Applications now go through the city’s online portal. Receiving placement approval does not itself mean the city has offered an artist a paid commission.
Is the proposal seeking placement approval, procurement funding or both?
Changes and removal also require review
The commission’s published remit extends to alteration and removal of covered artworks. A delivery agreement should anticipate future changes, including re-siting or treatment that affects the work. The commission page does not assign a project-specific maintenance budget.
Who will obtain approval if conservation or relocation changes the artwork?
Reimagining Columbus has distinct funding purposes
The city’s announcement describes $1.5 million for new City Hall public art within a $3.5 million initiative. The other $2 million supports community work and reconsideration of the Christopher Columbus statue. These announced allocations should not be presented as a currently available artist award.
