What the project record tells us

New York public sculpture

A suggestion of movement can be a fixed form

Wind Sculpture (SG) I translated the appearance of billowing patterned cloth into a fiberglass sculpture in New York’s Doris C. Freedman Plaza in 2018. Public Art Fund explains the textile references as part of a history of exchange among Indonesia, Europe and Africa. The work’s apparent lightness should therefore be considered alongside the specificity of its cultural references. For a comparable commission, what sightlines and interpretive material would help visitors connect the sculptural movement with the histories carried by its pattern?

Leeds memorial

A memorial can make room for gathering

Hibiscus Rising was unveiled in Leeds in 2023 to honor David Oluwale, whose death followed police harassment. Art Fund credits the David Oluwale Memorial Association, LEEDS 2023 and Leeds City Council with the commission. Its flower form connects remembrance with a place for gathering. Define the memorial’s everyday public use alongside its commemorative subject, including the gatherings the setting should welcome.

Funding for the surrounding public space

The setting can need a separate funding plan

Art Fund distinguishes its support for Hibiscus Rising from a crowdfunding campaign for an accessible surrounding space. The sculpture and its setting required related but different funding scopes. A commissioning budget should include the landscape and access improvements needed for the intended public use. Identify which improvements must be funded alongside the artwork for the completed place to function as planned.
