What the project record tells us
Hobart installation, 2016
Program the overhead movement
Our Time, documented in Hobart in 2016, lets visitors move beneath pendulums whose differing rhythms combine with light and sound. The work makes duration something encountered bodily across a room. For a commissioning conversation, this precedent suggests defining the visitor route and the relationship between moving equipment and occupied space early. A venue team should ask how the choreography, sound coverage and overhead movement would be coordinated for its particular room, with maintenance access considered alongside the audience experience.
How would pendulum movement, visitor circulation and service access be coordinated within the proposed room?

Fondation Cartier collaboration, 2016
Treat the soundscape as a central collaborator
Great Animal Orchestra grew from Fondation Cartier’s invitation to UVA for its 2016 exhibition around Bernie Krause’s recordings. Projected spectrograms translate those soundscapes into a surrounding visual field, while a shallow dark pool reflects the imagery and responds to sound. This is a useful precedent for a commission where an existing research archive drives the experience. Planning should establish who supplies and approves the recordings, how listening conditions shape the room, and how the water element affects the installation layout.
Who would supply and approve the source recordings, and how would sound and water requirements shape the room?

Permanent commission at Paddington Central, 2016
Connect software content to the specific place
Message from the Unseen World was commissioned by Future City for British Land’s Paddington Central in 2016. Its tribute to locally born Alan Turing combines a coded presentation of his writing with software interpreting a commissioned Nick Drake poem. The LED and perforated aluminium work therefore links physical construction to an authored text system. A comparable public commission would benefit from deciding how local history becomes content, who approves revisions, and how the software remains intelligible to future operators.
