What the project record tells us

Desert X landscape installation

One installation can have incompatible viewpoints

I AM arranged neon within hundreds of craters for Desert X in 2017. The commissioner explains that the phrase becomes intelligible from above while visitors on the ground encounter a more abstract field. This division is a useful precedent for commissions whose widely circulated aerial image differs from the bodily experience on site. The design brief should account for both encounters and the means of documenting them. What should a person understand from the accessible route without ever seeing the work from the air?

LACMA Art + Technology Lab collaboration

A research partner can shape the artwork’s form

Strachan’s studio describes ENOCH as a satellite project developed with LACMA’s Art + Technology Lab and launched in 2018. It commemorated Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., the first African American astronaut selected for a national space program. The work’s premise joins memorial recognition to a technical research partnership. For comparable projects, an early brief should distinguish artistic objectives, engineering milestones and public explanation. What evidence and documentation would allow an audience to understand an artwork whose principal physical component is not directly accessible?

LACMA immersive exhibition

An exhibition environment has multiple material needs

LACMA’s The Day Tomorrow Began brought monumental sculptural works into an exhibition that also used rice, grass and ceramic figures. The museum’s 2025–26 presentation demonstrates how Strachan’s treatment of history can operate through a whole environment rather than through a single object. For a host considering a related commission, material differences should inform the production schedule and care plan from the start. Which components would require environmental monitoring, replacement or specialist handling during the intended public presentation?
