Research notes for project planning
What the project record tells us
Indoor installation in New York
Two scales of rotation indoors
Japan Society’s curators describe Little Cosmos as a cluster of white hexagons that turn individually while the larger sculpture also revolves. For the 2025 exhibition, the curators planned to use gallery ventilation and add fans to support the indoor kinetic works. The precedent is useful for an atrium brief because the air supply is part of the viewing experience. Ask for a coordinated plan covering suspension, airflow and lighting, so that movement and cast shadows can be evaluated together in the intended room.

Water is a moving part of the artwork
The Elated! guide identifies Silent Water as a 2024 aluminum and stainless-steel sculpture. Internal water jets move its divided polyhedral sections; returning water makes ripples in the pool. For an existing-pool commission, assign responsibility for reviewing water treatment, access to the jets, operating hours and coordination between the sculpture and other pool equipment.

Distinguish outdoor commissions from gallery works
Japan Society’s guide names Dialog with the Sun (1995), Distant Sky (2012) and Rainbow Leaves (2021) as permanent New York installations. These urban precedents differ from Shingu’s lighter indoor pieces. Before choosing a reference project, establish whether the brief concerns a suspended interior work, freestanding outdoor sculpture or water-based installation; the formats are not interchangeable.
