Research notes for project planning
What the project record tells us
Documented outdoor presentations; United Nations 2018 and Tampa 2023.
A flood made from light
WATERLICHT uses LEDs and lenses to give visitors the sensation of standing beneath a virtual water level. The studio documents presentations at the United Nations in New York in 2018 and in Tampa in 2023, alongside European and other international sites. Wind, rain and humidity participate in the appearance of this outdoor light environment. For a waterfront or civic-space brief, the useful starting point is the local water story: what flood history, audience route and evening viewing conditions should shape the installation?

Big Art Partners planning prompt Agricultural installation developed with farming and research partners.
An agricultural site is part of the work
GROW placed moving red and blue illumination across a field of growing leeks. The studio dates its launch to 2020 and describes development through Rabobank’s artist residency with Wageningen University & Research, BioLumic and MediaMonks. The crop and research partnerships give the project a specific agricultural context. A host exploring a related commission would need an actual grower and seasonal timetable: how would public access, harvesting and the light intervention coexist without turning the farm into a conventional event ground?

Big Art Partners planning prompt Afsluitdijk bunker presentation, 2017; living algae installation.
Living material changes the operating brief
GLOWING NATURE was presented in the Friesland bunker on the Afsluitdijk in November 2017, as part of ICOON AFSLUITDIJK. Visitors’ movement activated light from algae held in a custom polymer enclosure. The studio credits public infrastructure partners and biological research collaborators, making the installation a useful reference for projects that combine site interpretation with living material. Before planning a comparable public encounter, who would maintain the biological conditions, manage visitor interaction and distinguish the exhibited installation from the studio’s separate street-light research?
