Federation Square commission for Melbourne’s Light in Winter Festival.
Botanical forms carry a winter-light narrative
Luminous Intervention was commissioned by Federation Square for Melbourne’s Light in Winter Festival. Skunk Control combines kinetic and dichroic elements in flower-like forms, using the imagined behavior of plants that store and release light to frame the work. The moving forms and changing color are therefore part of a narrative about darkness and the solstice. A commissioning brief should ask how the movement cycle, viewing position and surrounding illumination will work together, and whether interpretation should explain the botanical fiction alongside the observable optical effects.
How will movement, ambient light and interpretation convey the work’s botanical fiction?

2024 temporary-public-art selection for Castonguay Square, Waterville, Maine.
A temporary square becomes a moving light garden
Waterville Creates selected Skunk Control through its 2024 temporary-public-art call for Light Sentinels in Castonguay Square. The commissioner describes ten flower-based sculptures, each sixteen to twenty feet tall, with petals that open and close while casting changing colored shadows around them. The documented setting is a public square, where the surrounding ground is part of the visual field. A host should ask how the proposed arrangement would preserve pedestrian routes, keep the moving components accessible for maintenance and provide enough adjacent surface for the colored shadows.
How will circulation, maintenance access and the surrounding shadow field be accommodated?

Blacktown City Council commission informed by local dragonfly wings.
Color changes through angle and daylight
Commissioned by Blacktown City Council, Light Wing takes its segmented structure from a local dragonfly’s wings. Its optical windows sit at different angles, reflecting and transmitting light so that colors change with the viewer’s position and the time of day. Skunk Control relates the effect to structural color in insects, making the material arrangement central to the experience. For a new outdoor setting, a buyer should ask how orientation, nearby shade and principal pedestrian approaches would affect the work across the full daily cycle.
