What the project record tells us
LaGuardia Airport Terminal B
An airport can frame a changing image of time
Shorter than the Day brought images of New York’s sky into LaGuardia’s Terminal B in 2020. Public Art Fund describes a suspended structure through which a sequence of photographs registers the passing day. The commission links an airport’s experience of travel and waiting with a local view of time. For a future transport commission, the viewing conditions should include both purposeful movement and periods of pause. What will a hurried passenger perceive, and what additional relationships might someone waiting nearby discover?

Suspension depends on the building team
Public Art Fund’s Terminal B case study describes developing Sze’s proposal through engineering and coordination with the base building team. It also explains how the suspension was made visually consistent with the ceiling. That history is a useful reminder that an apparently light installation can rely on substantial work outside the visible artwork. The proposal should identify which decisions belong to the artist, engineers and building contractor while changes are still possible. Who must approve support locations and service access before fabrication begins?

A landscape work can include the sky
Fallen Sky sets 132 mirrored stainless-steel elements into a hillside at Storm King. The collection record describes a fragmented, concave form developed through studies of erosion, with reflections that change as visitors move and weather passes above. The work offers a precedent for treating the landscape as an active part of a sculpture’s perception. Ground conditions and approaches should therefore be considered with the reflective material. How will planting, seasonal change and the route around the work shape what a visitor sees?
