What the project record tells us

Barbican presentation; work dated 2012

Include the water system in the visitor brief

Rain Room is dated 2012 in Random International’s project archive, which lists the Barbican among its presentations. The work uses tracking, valves and a water-management system so human presence interrupts the falling water. For a host, the compelling visitor interaction is inseparable from a substantial physical installation. Early planning should ask how the wet system, grated floor and tracking area relate to the room, and how visitor movement and operational checks would be supported throughout the day.

Permanent commission at 30 Albert Embankment, 2018

Test recognition from several approaches

Self and Other (for the Albert Embankment) is documented as a permanent 2018 work commissioned by St James and curated by Futurecity. Layers of glass and LEDs translate a visitor’s figure into light; the image changes with viewpoint and may follow movement with a delay. That makes approach direction part of the artistic experience. A public-space brief should identify where someone first notices the work, where they can pause to interact, and how surrounding pedestrian movement affects the tracking and sightlines.

Permanent sculpture at the Zayed Centre, London, 2019

Design the behavior for its institutional setting

Kinds of Life was commissioned for the Zayed Centre for Research into Rare Disease in Children at Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2019. The moving sculpture uses winches and custom controls, responds to its surroundings, and developed through conversations with researchers. This precedent invites a brief that considers the character of movement alongside the architecture. A hospital or research venue should describe the desired balance between surprise and calm, identify its operating team, and establish how maintenance access can coexist with everyday circulation.
