What the project record tells us

Interactive art within a working transit station

Passengers become performers

Kendall Band places three sound-making components between the tracks at Kendall Square’s transit station. Matisse’s account describes passengers using platform levers to activate bells, a resonant ring and a thunder sheet. The 1987 installation makes waiting time part of a collective musical encounter. For another transit commission, the interface deserves the same attention as the sculpture itself. Define who can reach and operate it, how instructions are presented and how maintenance access will be coordinated with the station’s operating constraints.

Civic sound work and neighboring uses

Sound affects people beyond the audience

The Musical Fence was commissioned for Cambridge City Hall in 1980 as an array of aluminum tubes visitors could strike. Matisse’s account explains that enthusiastic nighttime playing led to its removal, followed by other display arrangements. The history offers a direct lesson for public sound commissions: participation can extend beyond the hours or audience imagined in the brief. Before selecting a comparable work, discuss nearby homes and workplaces, desired hours of use and the means of managing sound without undermining the artwork’s purpose.

Conservation of an interactive transit artwork

Participation depends on long-term repair

Matisse’s Kendall Band page records a preservation effort begun by MIT students in 2010 to refurbish the transit artwork. That history demonstrates the value of maintenance knowledge surviving beyond the original installation. It does not confirm that every component operates today. A buyer commissioning a visitor-powered sound work should request records of moving parts, tuning and adjustment, and identify who can diagnose a loss of function. Establish how an outage will be communicated to visitors and how repairs can preserve the intended musical behavior.
