What the project record tells us

MASS MoCA immersive installation

An installation can host a continuing program

Until filled a MASS MoCA gallery with an immersive landscape of found materials while also providing a setting for performances and public discussion. The museum organized the project with co-producers Crystal Bridges and Carriageworks. That precedent connects physical production to the people and schedules that activate a space after installation. A host considering an immersive commission should decide how programming relates to the artist’s environment before fixing the floor plan. What resources and access will visiting performers or discussion participants need?

First stage of MTA commission

Translation requires named collaborators

For Every One, Cave recomposed James Prinz’s photographs of Soundsuits into images for the subway connector. The MTA describes corresponding architectural colors developed with di Domenico + Partners and a companion video showing dancers activating the suits. These translations preserve different aspects of the original sculptures across still images, glass and movement. A commission brief should identify the authorship and production responsibilities of each layer. Which photographic, architectural and moving-image contributions need coordinated approvals before the final artwork can be fabricated?

MTA station construction and staged opening

Completion can follow the infrastructure schedule

The MTA’s May 2022 release confirms the completed Each One, Every One, Equal All trilogy after the first section opened in September 2021. Mayer of Munich fabricated the mosaics, while the new sections occupied different positions around the rebuilt shuttle and station entrance. This staged history is useful for commissions tied to transport construction: an opening date for one component need not establish completion of the whole commission. How should acceptance, documentation and public information distinguish each delivered stage?
