What the project record tells us

Practice-level marine material intent; no generalized ecological guarantee.

Marine change is part of the premise

Taylor’s biography presents submerged and tidal sculpture as a practice designed to interact with marine life over time. It identifies pH-neutral, bioreceptive materials as part of that approach. This is a statement of design intent rather than a guarantee of a particular ecological result at every site. For a commissioner, the precedent connects sculpture planning with the conditions of the receiving environment. The relevant early discussion would establish what observations, expertise and maintenance arrangements are needed to understand how a proposed installation develops.

Installed 2014; marine deployment precedent.

A large form assembled below the surface

Ocean Atlas was installed in the Bahamas in 2014. The studio describes a figure exceeding sixty tonnes, assembled underwater in sections, with a solar-powered light and flag marking its marine position. Those details make deployment and navigation central to the work’s public setting. A comparable project would need to develop the visual proposal alongside the sequence for transporting, lowering and joining components. The useful precedent is the integration of a monumental figure with the practical conditions of an active coastal environment.

Installation 2016; official inauguration January 2017.

Installation and opening are different milestones

The artist records Museo Atlántico’s installation in 2016 and its official inauguration in January 2017, following several years of planning and construction. More than three hundred cast figures occupy a submerged area off Lanzarote. Its scale is therefore spatial as well as numerical: visitors encounter a field of works in a marine setting. The planning lesson is to distinguish fabrication, deployment and public opening as separate milestones, each dependent on site conditions and the intended way people will access and understand the project.
