In the Light of a Shadow: sculpture arranged as a timed environment
MASS MoCA’s archived 2021–2022 exhibition occupied its Building 5 gallery with a suspended field of objects, moving shadows and sound. The museum links the installation to civil-rights protest histories in Selma and Derry and describes a metal-bar sculpture whose sequence of notes references U2’s Sunday Bloody Sunday. Its visitor guidance recommends a thirty-minute experience beginning on the hour. The work therefore offers a documented precedent for coordinating interpretation, duration and spatial presentation.

Bridge: a repeated gesture at architectural scale
The Smithsonian describes Bridge (2013–2014) as nearly one hundred feet long, composed of two hundred suspended casts of athlete Tommie Smith’s raised right arm. It relates the work to his 1968 Olympic human-rights salute and Kaino’s continuing collaboration with Smith. The museum acquired this sculpture in 2022 and announced its Luce Foundation Center installation in 2024. Those collection details identify a particular museum-owned work rather than an available touring object.

Sixth Street PARC: beginning with the people who use the crossing
Los Angeles’ Bureau of Engineering documents Kaino’s selection for the Sixth Street PARC through a public competition and advisory committee. Its account highlights his interviews with people using the viaduct and his attention to the crossing between Boyle Heights and the Downtown Arts District. This is evidence of a community-oriented selection and concept process. The page describes the proposed project in future tense, so it should not be cited as confirmation that a finished artwork has opened.
