Research notes for project planning
What the project record tells us
Somerset House courtyard, London Design Biennale, 2021
Landscape and public programming share a brief
Forest for Change brought 400 trees into Somerset House's courtyard for the London Design Biennale in June 2021. Project Everyone's delivery account records a central Global Goals installation, visitor contributions, performances and discussions. Its credited partners include Scape Design, Scotscape, lighting and sound specialists. The precedent is useful for a temporary landscape commission because planting, interpretation and event programming were developed together. A new brief should establish who manages the living material and how everyday visitors share the site with programmed gatherings.

The transition is part of the artwork
Superblue's account of Forest of Us describes a film whose screen opens to let visitors move into a mirror maze. The work connects the branching forms of lungs with trees and uses reflection to reconsider human relationships with the biosphere. This provides a concrete precedent for an immersive commission in which the threshold between media and physical space carries meaning. Planning should consider how groups encounter the film, cross the opening and orient themselves inside the reflective environment without losing the sequence.

Participation needs a complete technical chain
Please Feed the Lions added a fluorescent-red sculpture to Trafalgar Square in 2018 through Devlin's collaboration with Google Arts & Culture. Public words entered a poem generated with Ross Goodwin's algorithm; text appeared in the lion's mouth by day and was projected onto the lion and Nelson's Column after dark. For a comparable civic commission, this precedent makes the connection between input, computation and public display explicit. Planning should assign responsibility for that whole chain and for the different daytime and nighttime encounters.
