El Pulpo Mecanico: salvaged metal put into motion

The artist’s account of El Pulpo Mecanico describes a mechanical octopus built with Jerry Kunkel from salvaged objects and a donated 1973 Ford truck. A large cam drives the moving tentacles and eyes, while flame effects add a separate performance system. This combination matters when studying the work: its character comes from coordinated mechanical movement and fire, as well as the assembled metal surface.

El Pulpo Magnifico: a separate octopus and specification

Flatmo describes El Pulpo Magnifico as a 28-foot sculpture constructed in Eureka from reused metal and aluminum, including kitchenware and thrift-store finds. Its eight moving tentacles, eight eyes and button-controlled flame display belong to this later work. A project inquiry should identify Magnifico by name: photographs and technical information for the original Mecanico should not be treated as specifications for the same physical object.

Learning from repairs between presentations

In his 2024 Burning Man interview, Flatmo explains that road travel and aging, rusted material created repeated repairs on the original El Pulpo. He describes the successor as a chance to improve weight, assembly and durability. That firsthand account makes the pair a useful reference for the lifecycle of touring kinetic sculpture: inspection, access for repairs and reassembly are part of the artwork’s operating history, beyond its first public appearance.
