Bloom: temperature-responsive surfaces in an outdoor experiment
DO|SU documents Bloom at Materials & Applications in Los Angeles in November 2011. Its 414 panels combine thermobimetal tiles with folded aluminum frames. The studio describes the metal curling as it warms, changing the openings in the surface. This is a specific installation precedent for exploring environmental response through material behavior.
What temperature range, sun exposure and seasonal behavior should a new responsive surface be designed to reveal?

Drift: a touring presentation driven by heat and balance
The studio’s Drift account describes about 1,100 rotating elements combining heat-sensitive metal with stainless-steel counterweights. Theater lights warm the thermobimetal, shifting the elements’ orientation. Completed presentations are documented in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles in 2016, for events supported by Toyota Prius and The Creators Project.
