What the project record tells us

Completed 2020 installation at Society Las Olas.

A figure that also frames an entrance

Popper’s studio dates Thrive to 2020 at Society Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale. The large figure opens its chest around a planted interior, and the listed construction materials include glass-fiber-reinforced concrete, steel and fiberglass. The relationship between body and opening makes the work part of the building’s approach experience. For a similar setting, the useful planning conversation would join sculpture placement, the route through or beside it and the care of incorporated vegetation before treating the artwork as an isolated facade feature.

How will the sculpture’s opening, adjacent circulation and incorporated planting be designed and maintained together?

Temporary exhibition opened 2021 and ended February 2023.

An exhibition distributed across a landscape

Human+Nature placed monumental sculptures across the Morton Arboretum, with the exhibition running from May 2021 through February 2023. The institution describes works ranging from fifteen to twenty-six feet high within its much larger grounds. This was a temporary exhibition, and its ended status matters when using it as a precedent. The project suggests a planning discussion about a sequence of encounters: how the scale of each object relates to its immediate setting, and how visitors navigate the distance between separate installations.

How will individual sculpture settings and the routes between them create a coherent visitor experience?

Studio production roles and material range.

Build the technical conversation into the brief

The studio’s description of its team identifies installation and construction expertise alongside technical design that connects engineering with fabrication. Its practice also spans multiple materials and both temporary and permanent settings. That production context is useful because an apparently unified figurative form can depend on several different disciplines working together. A commissioning brief can define the required experience while leaving room for the artist’s team to resolve structure, surface and assembly in concert, with clear responsibility for the interfaces between those decisions.
