Bill and Mary Buchen

Bill and Mary Buchen work together on public environments that connect sound, movement and spatial experience. Sonic Architecture identifies both artists as its co-founders and describes their interactive work for schools, museums, science centers and playgrounds. Phoenix’s public art register credits both Buchens for Suncatchers at the Arizona Science Center, completed in 1997: five wind-driven sculptures combine light-reflecting elements with mallets and tone bars. The duo’s project portfolio also describes Wind Pavilion, dated 1995, at the WILDS in southeastern Ohio, where wind-harp panels form an octagonal shade structure. Flight Wind Reeds, dated 2003, uses five tall elements with moving forms and bells at the North Carolina Museum of Art. These projects connect collective listening, play and outdoor environmental forces.
